I’m new on Twitter and I don’t know who to follow. So I followed Mike Arrington, whom everyone follows.

Mike can be scary, he blocks a dozen people everyday and he doesn’t care how mad people get. He used to be a lawyer after all.

Sometimes he says funny things too, and most of the time he says these things in the mid of the night.  If anyone wants to pitch to him, that’s the time to send an email.

The day I had one tweet exchange with him, I got two new followers.  They must have thought I knew Mike.  This gave me the idea that Twitter should display some kind of people list with their ROI numbers next to it. Mike’s ROI is 2.  (Stowe Boyd is also 2, so Stowe Boyd = Mike Arrington, even though Stowe’s followers are 5x less).  Robert Scoble’s number is 0, makes me a little sad because I think Robert is a good person.  Or maybe I should have used Google’s page ranking algorithm and get the numbers right.

I’ve told Mike about ShoppingNotes, but I don’t think he’ll ever use it. That’s OK. Because I know deep inside Mike is a low maintenance guy and he doesn’t shop. Whenever he needs a new T-shirt or baseball cap, he’ll just invest in some company and the next day they’ll send a box of those (possibly paid with his money) to his house.

I like Twitter because everything I need to know about Mike I learned from there.

  1. Hey! we’re actually checking out shoppingnotes now. Will you send me an email? Want to chat about it.

I think it would be a cool idea to compute some sort of “PeopleRank” based on who you follow, who you are followed by, who you twitter with, etc., much like Google PageRank’s using links between pages to determine their ranking. I’m sure Michael Arrington will easily be on the top of the ranking.

    What is an ROI number?

  4. Hi Wayne! I was just using #new followers I got / # my tweet exchange with so-and-so as an ROI number here :)
